“He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
I know that if I do not want to be driven, I must be led. If I am going to be led, it must be because of prayer. In Romans 8:14 it says, “For all who are being led by the spirit of God, these are the children of God.” All of us deal with the busyness of life. Our minds are full of what has to be done or should be done. If we are not careful, we can become very driven. The question that I ask is what is behind you that drives you so hard. It would just be a really good thing if some of the activities of our lives were replaced by a time of prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to increase His fire for living with the time that remains.
If there ever was a life that was pressured it certainly was the life of Jesus Christ. Yet time after time the scripture records that He breaks away for prayer. If we are going to increase the fire of God by the type of prayer life we lead, there must truly be a de-junking of our activities. I know much of what we do are legitimate activities in our day to day living. Yet like our giving if we dare to take our resources and give them to God, He has a way of making our resources stretch. When we pray, we are trusting God with our time. We take the time that we have and give it to God so that we can enter into a meaningful conversation with Him.
In Luke 24:49 it says, “But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Notice the words stay and until. There is definitely a time element. In other words, Jesus is saying stop before you do anything and wait on me until you begin what needs to be done. Like you, I am guilty of getting my life too cluttered; too busy with things that are demanding and legitimate concerns that need my attention. Yet I know that if I do not take time to recharge my life with God’s presence, I will not be able to do what I can do because I will lack the power and the insight that God gives when I slow down enough to listen.
In conclusion, I sincerely believe that we, as a church, need to set this priority. If you have already done it, then continue doing it. If you feel in any way that some of these points I have made speak to your heart, then let me encourage you to spend time with God. This is where you recharge your energy and receive the strength to be all you need to be and do all you need to do.
