Colossians 2:9-10 (KJV)
"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power"
Over the years in my pastoring, I have always sought to know what the Lord is doing. Many things have happened which I would compare to riding a large wave on the ocean. It has been my prayer that we would experience what I might term a genuine awakening. That's when people become alive and the life of God is clearly seen among His people. I have been a part of a number of moves of God and I have delighted in every one of them. It is awesome to see what God does. I have been humbled as I have seen His hand extended towards myself and others.
Let me share a few thoughts about what I think it looks like from the book of Colossians. Colossians is an awesome book that centers Christ in the midst of the church and particularly in this church as it was getting caught up in the ministry of angels. They were distracted away from the centeredness of who Jesus is. Today that message is still relevant. In the midst of any move of God, Christ must remain centered in all that we teach and say.
My first point is that a genuine awakening will reinforce body life. That means it will strengthen and enforce everyone's calling. We are all called of God to do a specific task; gifted to that end. We were never meant to be spectators. In doing the work of Christ, Colossians 2 says that if it is genuine and from God there will be no puffing up of the individuals to the exclusion of others. All are affirmed and we are complete in Him.
Secondly in a genuine move of God, it eliminates the need for the search of significance. Often people will wonder where they fit. They may wonder, "Am I wanted or needed in the Church?". If we are not careful, we will feel valued through the things we do and therefore search for significance in those things we do. If I understand this correctly, we are complete in him. We have received of His fullness and there is no need for us to be anything different than what He wants us to be.
Whenever revival comes to a church there are problems that come with it. Verse 18 says that they were worshiping angels. In other words, there is a concern for false spirituality that disconnects itself from Christ, who is the head of the church. We belong to a body to which Christ is the head and we are all part, net together, and increasing in God. Verse 19 affirms this and also that every member is contributing in this.
Thirdly, a genuine move of God is ruled by peace. Colossians 3:15 says, "Let the peace of God rule in your hearts." How do we monitor and steward the move of God. I believe it is done by the rule of the peace of God. I believe according to verse 15 that it is based on unity and thankfulness. In the next number of months it is important that all of us seek to clearly understand how to move with what God is doing. We need to clearly put Jesus at the head of the church.
Finally, that our hearts would be in tune God's heart. When that happens, Chapter 3 verse 16 becomes our experience. " Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
