2 Kings 3:18 (KJV)
“And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord...”
The story makes us very aware that God looks at our troubles and calls them “a small thing” or “a light thing”. Hearing that is not always easy to take. The thought that comes to mind: Is God aware of the degree of difficulty that we face? Whenever we face something that has a threatening nature, the possibility that we could be undone by it can cause anxiety to build in our heart. We think, “This is a big thing. I wonder if God is up for this.” Yet in this story it is clear that God gave them way more than what they had asked for. They were weakened and discouraged by the great drought they were in. They felt they were unable to proceed in any offensive war. Could they even defend themselves against the Moabites? In verse 18 God says through the prophet Elijah, “It is but a light thing.” In other words it was an easy matter for Him to produce a natural phenomenon.
I would remind all of us of the resourcefulness of God, His creativity and His ability to bring a word to us in the midst of our lack and concerns about how we will possibly survive. God is there, He does care, and He has a way for us. Everything that the prophet said came to pass. Nothing was missed out. The one lingering thought that they must have had when it was all over was, ”We thought it was a big deal, but God told us it was a light thing.” He is the same God today as He was then. He has a good plan for you and it is no big deal with Him to bring you through intact.
