Psalms 57:1 (NKJV)
“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, Until these calamities have passed by.”
To have the peace of God is absolutely critical to our stability. The word of God says that He will be there for us. I would like to make something absolutely clear. Peace is not the absence of trouble in your life. Often people become offended and disappointed with God when turmoil comes into their life. It is possible to be in the midst of a real crisis in your life and still experience the peace of God. I have been in times of dire need and been pressed on all sides and yet I had this wonderful peace keeping me stable. If I speak of peace some might look at it as harmony and rest within their natural environment. It might be a picture of someone laid back on a chair with him in a vacation spot on a sunny day near the beach with seemingly not a problem in the world. It all sounds good, but when reality sets in sometimes that kind of peace seems to evaporate in a matter of moments. I am convinced that we as Christians do not base peace upon that type of circumstance.
The kind of peace that Jesus gives to us deals with security and His protection even in the midst of a storm. The example of this is in the gospels. It is the story of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee in which a great storm arises. The disciples are all in jeopardy. They feel as though they will drown and yet Jesus is asleep completely at peace. Jesus asked the disciples why they were so troubled and why had they not done something about what was happening to them. I would conclude from that story that there is no safer place than being with our Lord Jesus Christ. Even when it appears all could be lost; He reassures His disciples that it would not happen. Thomas also says, “He that dwells in the secret place of God shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He goes on to say that He still cover you will his feathers and under His wings will give you refuge.
I am very aware that I need to start every day with a consciousness that God is with me. I need to be aware of the truth of His word when He says that NO weapon that is formed against me will prosper. If I read that correctly, it indicates that weapons are being formed against us, but they will not prosper. What type of weapons do you think these are? I would suggest sickness, poverty, and destroyed relationships. These things can cause meltdowns in people’s lives. I realize it is important where I allow my mind to go. If I am under the shadow of God, if I truly believe that and embrace that, the resulting peace of that knowledge impacts every perception that I have.
I would like to close by saying that although I have never found life without its challenges, I have never found my life in Christ without His sustaining peace. I have a choice and that choice is to believe that God will keep my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. His perfect peace remains with me no matter what my situation, no matter how unstable life may appear to be. I have a life, in God, hid in Christ Jesus.
