Luke 2:8-11 (KJV)
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
The angel of The Lord had orchestrated this thing. He released his glory, the glory of The Lord, all through that geographical area. The night sky was blazing with the radiance of God's creatures, the angelic hosts who began to sing. I have heard the angels sing and it was like nothing I had ever heard before. Their voices blend in absolute harmony and the sound comes out, or at least it did to me, as rolling waves. It was not so much heard in my ears, but the impact was felt in my whole being. It was as though something beautiful and holy was moving over me and through me in waves of absolute beauty. I do not know if it was that way for the shepherds, but I have a feeling that it was all that and much more. I think possibly, the mountains and the hills vibrated with the power of the angel's words, "I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people." By God's announcement, through the angel, He was bringing the good news.
The gospel is called good news. The announcement of it should bring great joy. It is that beautiful knowing on the inside of you that something very right has happened, that announcement that something new is beginning, that things have changed in so many ways for you because you have encountered God's goodness and happy news. It must have been something for those shepherds to process such an awesome moment. I am sure they were wondering, "What is this all about?" It was The Lord who was saying to them that all you have waited for, the deliverer, the savior, has now come. With that message there was a huge glory. That glory and that light were going to come upon them. It was going to break the power of darkness. It was going to break the power of Satan's oppression over people's lives. It was a new day, it was a new time, and everything was going to be forever changed. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was only a few years away. It was the beginning of a whole new era to come.
When I think Christmas, I think of happy beginnings which lead to the cross which deals with my absolute need of a savior, the anointed one, Jesus Christ, to come into my life and to change it forever. Christmas is the announcement of a new beginning, a complete change, a new way to look at life and understand God's great love for me. Christmas is full of hope and love. As you make your heart ready during this Christmas season, receive the best gift you ever could: God's love through his son Jesus Christ.
