1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
"Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
The appropriate response is THANKSGIVING
Often we may feel trapped and overwhelmed by our circumstances. Thanksgiving has a way of breaking down the power of entrapment through circumstances. Thanksgiving lifts you up and above the circumstances. It also empowers you in the midst of pressures. On Wednesday night I said "Stop looking at what you have lost and consider what you have left". Thanksgiving involves you opening your mouth and speaking. So begin to speak to your circumstances with thanksgiving.
People often get stuck on the problem. For example, if I ask you to take 5329 and subtract it from 1284 it might take you some time to do the calculation in your head. However, if left alone you would be able to do it. If I asked you to tell me your address and where you live at the same time you did the previous calculation in your head, what was in your head in terms of solving the mathematical problem would be subordinated to you giving your address.
You see, the moment you open up your mouth that is what takes control. James tells us that a ship is turned by it's rudder and then he goes on to say that our words are much like that rudder. Try it, you will see what you are saying has more power than what you are trying to think. So your mouth will cause you to go from being stuck in the problem to speaking the solution. Thanksgiving will cause you to go from being constantly under attack to being on the attack. When negative oppressing thoughts hit you, your answer is right under your nose. It's your mouth and you need to use it to the glory of God by operating in thanksgiving. In the New Testament the Bible likens the Word of God to a sharp two edged sword. I think one of the reasons for that is much of the Word of God is given to thanksgiving. We do not need to magnify the negative things in our life, thanksgiving has a way of making God bigger than your problems.
Psalm 50:23 (NIV)
"He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God"
