Luke 8:54 (AMP)
“And clasping her hand, He called, saying, Child, arise [from the sleep of death]!”
Jesus was under real pressure. People were pressing around Him to the point that they were almost suffocating Him. Unexpectedly, a woman pushes through the crowd and touched the hem of His garment. The scripture says that immediately, she was healed. This is an unexpected event in the midst of Jesus hearing that He needed to go to Jairus’ home. We need to know that God can come upon the scene in ways that we do not expect. I truly believe that we are not always meant to understand what is coming next.
Jesus, knowing that virtue had flowed from him asked, “Who touched me?” He was insistent, “Someone did touch me because healing power has gone from me.” They, the disciples, were amazed that He would know that in the midst of the press of the crowd. The woman came to him trembling and declared all that had happened to her. She was instantly cured and she knew it. Who could have seen that coming? No one. It happened because of her confidence and her trust in Jesus. It had made her completely well. Jesus told her to go in peace. I know that when we are in hot pursuit of something, we tend to be single minded and focused to what we feel needs to happen. There are many interruptions along the way and the woman touching the hem of Jesus’ garment was one. Again, no one saw that coming.
Another surprise is when Jesus comes to Jairus’ house and knows that the daughter of Jairus is dead. They tell Jairus not to trouble or weary Jesus any longer. Again, we do not always see the depth and the power and the strength of God. Jesus says to Jairus, “Do not be alarmed or struck with fear, simply believe and she will be well.” I know that God will take us into places where we will not always understand, yet when we cannot see around the corner this story made clear the importance of trust. The impact of the death of a child was so powerful that all were weeping and wailing. Jesus told them not to weep. She is not dead, but sleeping. They laughed at Him. The scripture says He put them all out. You see, when God wants to show us something it is not always comfortable. No one could see what He was about to do because death seems too final. Who could have known that God would turn this around? He grasped her hand and said, “Child arise.” The bible says that her spirit returned and her parents were amazed.
This story, I believe, makes it clear that God can and does surprise us. That we cannot possibly see all of what He might and will do. I wonder what is around our corner. The interventions of God are so amazing. He transcends into our situations and turns them around for His glory. The gospels are real stories that are meant to touch our lives and strengthen our confidence and trust towards God. I encourage you when you cannot see around the corner, know this, that it is a time to be at peace because God is already there for whatever your need is.
